Welcome to the Green Room!

There is no better place on the web to talk with other poker aficionados about poker and non-poker related topics! We are delighted to have you here with us and look forward to seeing you in the forums and at the tables!

While here, we ask that everyone bear in mind that forums serve as a space where people can take part in free and considerate exchanges of thoughts and ideas. In order to promote a non-offensive and fun environment, read over the guidelines outlined below.

Please remain considerate of the stipulations. Anyone who is not considerate of the guidelines will be contacted and asked to delete/edit the thread/post in question. If they do not make the required adjustments, we reserve the right to delete/edit the inappropriate part or take further action. We can take a joke and we want everyone to have fun, but please remember that not all viewers hold the same opinion and these guidelines are here to ensure that we all get along.

Forum Guidelines

Celebrities:
The star-appeal of our site is one of the main things that set us apart from other on-line poker sites. Please refrain from insulting the celebrities. While there is no harm in critiquing professional work, personal attacks are simply rude and therefore, not acceptable. It’s a safe bet that you would not want them attacking you, so let’s keep it fair and friendly!

Sexually Explicit/Generally Obscene Images and Messages:
Forums are a place for personal expression, but we ask that you express yourself bearing good taste in mind. Material that is sexually or otherwise obscene is not permitted on these forums.

Advertising:
Since this is a Hollywood Poker.com forum, please to not advertise for other poker rooms here. Affiliate codes and any other items that would be considered SPAM are included in this stipulation and they will be deleted.

Privacy:
Please do not release any information about another person on this site without that individual’s consent. We understand that some of our players may have personal off-site relationships, but divulging personal information about another person on this site is not acceptable. The onus is on each person to decide what she or he wishes to disclose about her or himself.

Racism/Sexism/Swearing:
Prejudice does not exactly spawn the sort of fun-loving and friendly environment most of us would want to see in a forum. Any post that is deemed to promote and/or convey any sort of prejudicial message will be deleted immediately.

Personal Attacks:
Personal attacks are not permitted in the forums or in private messages. Of course we respect the fact that you may have differing opinions, but that does not justify attacking each other on a personal level. This includes slander, name-calling, threats, intimidation, bullying or any other type of harassment.

Private Messaging:
Private messaging is a feature that we offer our members. They are a privilege and not a right. Private messages are not part of the forums and therefore we do not proactively moderate them. However it is unacceptable to carry out any kind of personal attacks or threats through our private message system. Should any members abuse this feature, it can and will be disabled. If you would like to disable this feature you can do so by going to user cp/edit options and unchecking the “enable private messaging” box.

There is a three strike rule here with respect to all of our guidelines. Strike one all parties involved will be warned. Strike two forum posting and private message privileges will be disabled for a month for all parties involved. Strike three all parties involved will be permanently banned.

We understand that some of our members may have personal off-site relationships, friendships and squabbles; however we ask that these be kept off of our site. We want our players to be a part of the exciting and mutually fulfilling exchanges in our forums. As such, we would appreciate it if everyone could respect the guidelines. Please remember that they are in place to ensure all players can enjoy the forums.

Thank you in advance for your understanding and co-operation!

Green Room is a term used in Hollywood as the "waiting area" before someone is on. Say someone is on Jay Leno, they wait in the Green Room until it is there time to go on. I'm sure there is some explanation as to why it is called a green room and I will look it up and see what I can find.

A few years ago, while sitting in the green room of a comedy melodrama theater in San Jose, the cast and crew had a contest to see who could find the most definitive answer to the origin of the term Green Room (we painted ours green, which was kind of nice, actually - very calming).

Nobody won. We were all stumped.

Nobody knows exactly where (or why/how) the term Green Room came into being. Google yielded this article, which I thought very interesting:

http://www.worldwidewords.org/img/logo.gif

GREEN ROOM

[Q] From Bob Lallamant: “I have always wondered why the reception room for performers—opera singers, actors and the like—is called the green room?”

[A] Originally, the term referred to an off-stage room in a theatre where actors could rest while they were waiting for their cues. A lot of theatres now don’t have green rooms, often through lack of space. These days, the term applies as much—if not more often—to the reception room in a television studio where guests wait before appearing.

Why it should be called a green room is a minor mystery. The first recorded use is in a play by Thomas Shadwell called The True Widow, first performed at Dorset Garden Theatre in London in December 1678: “No, Madam: Selfish, this Evening, in a green Room, behind the Scenes, was before-hand with me”. The use of a here might suggest it was just a green-painted room, but a slightly later example, in a book called Love Makes Man, written by the actor and dramatist Colley Cibber and published in 1701 makes the usage clear: “I do know London pretty well, and the Side-box, Sir, and behind the Scenes; ay, and the Green-Room, and all the Girls and Women Actresses there”. Colley Cibber was closely associated with a different theatre, the Drury Lane.

It has been suggested that the room was painted green to rest the actors’ eyes after exposure to bright stage lighting, but in the early 1700s, when lighting was by candles, that could hardly have been much of a problem.

In an article in De Proverbio, an online journal of proverb studies, George B Bryan points out that the colour green has long been associated with the theatre, perhaps originating in the liveries worn by members of acting companies in the time of Shakespeare. Mr Bryan also records that green baize was sometimes used to cover the stage at this period to protect the costumes of the actors.

This is a possible origin of an associated usage, the green, for the stage itself, which is still sometimes to be heard. The direct connection seems to be twentieth century rhyming slang: greengage = stage, but there may be a subconscious—or even a direct—link back to the colour of the stage covering.

What is clear from the early citations is that the usage was not limited to a single theatre (and so was not an accident of paint colour or wall covering) , but otherwise, its origins are obscure.

Anther interesting link:

http://www.theatrecrafts.com/glossary/pages/moregreenroom.html

One possible explanation excerpted:

* The room was walled with green baize as soundproofing, so actors
could practice their lines.

This is my favorite explanation, and the most plausible in my mind, because, long before our green room was painted green, we had sound baffling tiles installed, floor to ceiling, so that the noisy actors backstage wouldn't be heard by anyone on stage or in the audience. Baize is a thick cotton or woolen material that could be used for just that purpose, and was commonly used in theaters back in the day.

I have updated the rules to include personal attacks - that means if someone comes in here, or someone who is already here, blatantly attacks another member. It will not be tolerated.
