This week's poll question:

Do you talk smack at the tables?

GrdnWnThe500
07-29-2005, 03:20 PM
reason to talk smack at the tables is so you can get your opponents on tilt, let them move all in, and find the right time to take them out :silly:

or if you move all in they may think you have a bad hand and they will call :)

I usually just sit back and let the smack talkers have at it. Once in a while I throw out a barb to keep them typing so they are distracting themselves.

I don't like to smack talk to players. However, if others feel that this is the way to go...fine with me. Having raised 3 kids, I've heard it all before and nothing you can say bothers me. So, go ahead....give me your best shot! Then, I'll lean over and give you a kleenex to wipe your nose.....

depends on who's doing the smack talking with you. i mean, when you get one of those ignorant people who respond with "yeah... whatever", it gets frustration. i love the people who get really involved with it. makes the game more interesting.

I voted seldom,

As a person with a degree in philosophy, captain of high school and college debate teams, and 20 years experience as an attorney - I fell safe in saying there are very few people who can out-talk/out argue me. Yet I feel as a matter of personal taste that smack talking is a tactic for success thats beneath me: smack talking to upset a player is generally only going to work with a relative newbie, and I should be able to beat that person on skill. And against a better player, I'd still rather win by skill (though I am certainly happy to win by luck too :) ).

In a world all to full of hate and obnoxiousness, I choose not to add to it.

Except of course when someone else has aready begun the smack talk. If directed at me, I usually choose not to respond (as this infuriates most smack talkers the most) - but, if offended enough, I will respond in a manner designed to insure the smack talker realizes (s)he is going to get the worst of any dialogue, and look the most foolish. I will almost always do this when a smack talker goes after someone obviously more vulnerable (like a newbie, or just a shy type).

While I don't think smack talking is "wrong" or should be banned, I just don't like it and think it hurts the reputation of the game (to which I want more newbies/fish to be attracted) and makes for a less pleasant poker experience, even when I win both the argumnent and the money.

My thoughts anyway. :waytogo:

Never...

it gives info to the table

I do occaisionally lash out at idiots who beat me with stupid bets.

I will respond to personal attacks, but I almost universally play like a gentleman, take my bad beats and go play another table.

The smack attack...hmmm When needed, I feed it, but only to those deserving. I usually serve them with my almost poetic style of play an array of switching gears, creating fear, and see them crying in my poker rearview mirror. Nevertheless, I must confess, I have whined: Late in a tournament I had pocket aces that I didn't protect and I let someone wreck. They had 10, 2 unsuited and caught a straight...I was irrate that someone would call that that late and began my lyrical attack. But I never look back, but feel really bad that I talked smack.............. In the famous words of Teddy KGB (John Malkovich) "He beat me, straight up, pay that man his money." Have a great time playing, it's not always about the money. Your playing real people with real feelings and in the end you always get precisely what you deserve....what will make you laugh will make you cry....and make you have to play freerolls for a month. :roflmao: :roflmao:

Re: RiZPAYBOY's post about telling the table what his cards are and lisamarie20's reply that it's called cheating.

Actually it's called "Angle Shooting" and it's just as bad as cheating.

And the fact that you weren't being truthfull is irrelevant. This kind of behavior is just not acceptable.

Too many people think poker is a game of and for liars. This is not the case.

Keep doing it and support will get complaints and come looking for you.

In most "Brick and Mortar" cash games, when your are heads-up you can turn your cards over but, don't try it if there are more than you and one other person in the pot.

Online, you probably won't be sanctioned for saying what you have when your are heads-up but you better not show cards other than what you said you have.(this is where it matters whether or not you lied) And you won't get away, with doing it for very long if there are three or more players in the pot.

When it comes to Etiquette. Poker is actually a game for Gentlemen and Gentle Ladies. The more you inderstand and adhere to the etiquette of the game the more you and the people you play with will enjoy it.

At least, that's the way I see it.

ciao for now!

Hey icesickels and doubleeaglec,

We used to do weekly polls through our Hollywood Poker Extra, but they have since been replaced by the Hollywood Poker Quiz. From time to time, I will be adding polls to our HP Stars forum and giving away stars to all who vote. Feel free to send me any ideas you have!

Cheers,

Julie :)

People who talk smack are usually very unoriginal. "you donkey", "I can't believe you called a $300 raise with QQ!", "HP sucks because there are too many idiots who will call with anything!"

Good players don't need to talk smack. If you get hit with a bad beat you take it in stride and move on. There will always be someone who calls your bet for whatever reason. What can you do? Thats poker!

I never talk smack, its very disrespectful to the player and the game. and makes it no fun.

I think on a few rare occasions I may have said something back to a player (in a professional manner) but never would I provoke anything first.

well i myself dont like smack talk as im there to play poker not get people mad, however it will happen in any poker place. so if they talk alot of smack just ignore them with the ignore botton, or if you think they need a come back, be smart tell them this( oh im sorry please dont call me your familys names) it ususally works to get them off your back and they try to find someone else. even though there is many here that dont think myself onlys trying to be kind, they actually get offended by my way of life. but it will always be nicer to be polite than the ones who go out of their way to just be mean. thank you terryruss:happy:

Smack talk is a valuable weapon in the psychological warfare aspect of a poker game. Once you've gotten someone mad then they are at a distinct disadvantage. They will push with hands they shouldn't in an attempt to punish you and their thinking will be disrupted by the amount of anger they are having to deal with, meaning they will make mistakes for you to pounce on.

I don't condone breaking the rules of decorum established by the site for use in the chat windows etc and I rarely go on the offensive without provocation. But if I notice someone make a bad play and get extremely lucky to win, I let them know what I think about it specifically so they will focus (their bad play) a little more on beating me (of course often they manage to get lucky against me too!)

Poker is not a gentleman's game and should not be treated as such. It's roots trace back to the down right shady gamblers of old New Orleans and the (often outlaw) gunfighters and other rough frontier types of the Wild West, not the ladies and gentlemen of the aristocracy. Cricket is the gentlemen's game, and Horse Racing is the (gambling) sport of Kings.

Funnily enough smack talk is a part of cricket too, although they call it sledging. However, in cricket, it is considered inappropriate to directly attack an opponent so instead the derogertory remark (about the opponent) is made to one of your own teammates, nice and loud so the opponent can hear.

I'm not saying swearing or directly rude insults are acceptable but witty remarks that unsettle an opponent, disrupt their thinking or change their emotional state are pure gold!

I can't remember what I said to upset this guy, but obviously I hit the mark!

I've alway found that is much more fun (for me anyways) to as they say Kill them with kindness. Every so often you get some foul mouthed @^%@^*Q@ hole. So I just send them a :) and tell them to have a wonderful day!

Happy Cards!
