Well, apparently you all have experienced being on tilt! We received so many submissions for this week's Write to Win competition that we decided to stretch it over two weeks.

So here are the first batch of finalists for this week. Vote for your favorite and the winner will receive a fabulous HP tournament ticket. PLUS, one random voter will receive some new HP gear :waytogo:

And the finalists are...

Entry #1:

I’m usually a pretty calm person, but last year I totally lost it while playing poker with an earache. Anyone who’s ever had an earache can vouch that doing ANYTHING with an earache is torment. My son, who is in first year university, invited me to join his weekly poker with his friends. I was surprised, but didn’t want to miss out on this chance to spend some quality time with my son and – I’ll admit it – kicking his butt. I have never been a fantastic player, but I definitely have some solid experience behind me.

Fast track to the night of the game: I’ve somehow contracted an ear infection and spent 3 hours driving to my son’s place. When I arrive, I make a B-line to the kitchen and pour myself a drink; bad idea, in retrospect. As most reasonable people know, antibiotics + alcohol = incoherence. Oi.
During the entire game, my chip stack and mood fluctuated between extreme highs and lows. At one point, in a misguided attempt to gain a mental advantage, I actually told my unfortunate son exactly how and where he was conceived.

The next morning, I left with an extra $200, a deficit in dignity and a standing ban from any of my son’s future poker games.

Entry #2:

My friends and I have a weekly .50/1.00 NL game out in the New Jersey ‘burbs. Small stakes here - $40 buy/in and you can re-buy for the average chip stack when you bust out. So this past Tuesday we’re playing as usual, the same obnoxious male banter and farting noises coming from the depths of our beer bellies can be heard echoing down my friend’s hallway and then…IT HAPPENS. The whole world comes crashing down on me.

Okay, so maybe that’s an exaggeration, but if you were sitting in seat 9 next to the button for this one particular series of hands, you would feel my pain. I had been playing pretty tight winning a few small pots and donating to some others when I look down and see pocket nines – 9H 9D. Now pocket nine’s has never really been good to me, but since I am next to the button I come out with a $3 raise. Pretty standard 3 times the big blind raise. I look around, acting as if I’m trying to steal the blinds, but get 1 caller, and then 2 callers, 3 callers? This is not good, but I feel I’m in pretty good shape, thinking maybe the best hand against me is ace king or ace queen. No one else raises and the dealer deals out the flop (shuffling sounds, sounds of the cards hitting the table) - 9S 9C AH.

HOLY SCHNIKEES!!! I’ve flopped quad nine’s!!! I’m thinking this hand is in the bag. Two folds follow and then suddenly it happens. My friend (well, he WAS my friend before this hand) bets out $25. In my seat I’m squirming but still acting cool and calm, except for the sweat running down my forehead. It comes around to me with everyone folding and at this point he has about the same amount of chips as me, so I call the $25 and act like I’m sitting with an ace. The next card -7C. No help to him and I’m still sitting here with the quads.

He looks at me, smiles and then the words which I never will forget are uttered, “IM ALL IN, BIATCH!” I look at him, smile and quickly say, “I call, muchacho” as I flip over my pocket nines as his jaw drops to the table. He flips up (can you guess what he has, class?)…yes, you guessed it – pocket aces, pocket rockets, AA, the mother load. So, of course, now the only card that can come is the last ace.

We both stand up quickly, back away from the table like 2 western gun fighters in front of the ol’ saloon drawing our pistols tight against our bodies. In slow motion it seems, the dealer knocks the table and reaches for the last card to come. It flips up ---and there’s THE LAST BEEP’IN EXPLITIVE @#%@#%# ACE in the deck!! His quad aces rip to shreds the hopes and dreams of any profit on this night. You talk about Tilt, I felt like the marble ball inside the Adams Family Pinball game, getting flipped and bumped and bruised on my way to the gutter! I don’t think the shade of red that I turned exists in the color chart, but I received much consolation from my friends at the table.

I tried to remain calm as the next set of cards were dealt to me – I rebuy for $40…understand the egos involved in our “friendly” game of poker…and I get dealt pocket queens first thing. This can’t be happening to me, another pocket pair. I am 2 spaces away from the button, great position, and since I lost the prior hand I’m feeling a bit sad. I look down at my cards and make the biggest mistake a poker player can make. “I’m all in!!!!!” I exclaim. The tilt bug hit hard, because I receive a call for $40 (the rest of my money) as the player who knocked me out the previous hand flips over ace king, catches 2 kings on the flop, and destroys my night once again.

The moral of this story:

If your friend sucks out on you as bad as the aforementioned suck-out – KICK HIS BUTT with violence instead of money!

Entry #3:

MY DARKEST DAY

This I must say
I hate to see my chips
Going the other way
Dont let today be
My darkest day
With my stack dwindeling
I damn that river
With my stomach rumbling
Today may be
My darkest day
With my bankroll nearly gone
One last tourney I say
Finally a pot i won
Tripling up
Will it be enough
Down to the final three
Pocket rockets in the hole
All in times three
My aces against kings and queens
The flop king queen three
The turn brought a four
With my fate looking dim
And one more card to come
An ace on the river
Finally I won
Doubled my bank roll
So I guess today wasnt
My Darkest Day
