Entry #1

LESSONS LEARNED

I was jimmin’ with the Jammer
After slippin’ from the slammer.
The man said he wasn’t jokin’
‘bout my tickin’ and my tokin’.
So he gave me thirty days
to mend my wicked ways.
Instead of sittin’ like a stump,
I schooled for a month.
When I finally flew free,
I had a new philosophy.
I’m no longer just a toker,
I can now play poker.
I ‘m as agile as a rabbit,
even with my old habit.
The man did me a favor
tryin’ to alter my behavior.
I can hold em and I can fold em,
and my clips are now golden.
My purse jingles and jangles
since I learned all the angles.
But it hasn’t always been glory,
there’s a kicker to my story,
I was sittin’ at the table,
ready, willin’ and able.
The cards were running good,
and I was playin’ like I should.
When in walked the man,
(the one who’d put me in the can.)
He saw me sittin’ there,
but didn’t seem to care.
He had a babe on his arm,
and wasn’t there to cause harm.
After kissin’ her on the lips,
he bought a big rack of chips,
Then he pulled up a chair,
as if he didn’t have a care.
I wish that I could say
I got revenge that day.
But I was in total shock
and he played like a rock.
At the end of the session,
he’d taught me another lesson.
Try as hard as I can,
I just can’t beat the man.

Entry #2

What attracted me to poker? Easy. Money, money, money – and more money. I read ‘House of Cards’ in university and thought poker sounded like a glamorous way to make some serious cash – fast.

Little did I know there was a catch. You see, you have to be GOOD to score the bling. Sure, sure – there’s an element of luck in poker, but in my opinion, skill constitutes most of the outcome. For example, it takes patience to wait out the bad hands and make the good calls and as someone who can’t wait more than 5 minutes for anything, I consider patience an invaluable skill.

So what initially attracted me to poker is not really what keeps me coming back. Like all true love, my relationship with poker has evolved over time. What began as an infatuation with thrill and a quick-fix to a permanent problem (i.e. student debt) has cultivated into a deep-seeded appreciation, if not actual talent, for an amazing game.
