I can still see my grandfather and his children playing poker around the table at my grandparents home. They played for money. My sister and some of our cousins that were not allowed in the poker room (dining room) were nestled with me in front of a make-shift fireplace adjacent to the dining room.

We watched from the hardwood floors and listened: We listened for family gossip and any statements that would help us in our lives. We listened to the sounds from the kitchen as my grandmother made a layered cake for us. I can still here the sounds of the kitchen next to my family’s poker room as my grandmother made some cake.

But most importantly, we listened for the sound of money falling on the floor.

Entry #3

My favorite poker pal has dark eyes, long black hair and always is happy to see me. She keeps me warm on those nights when the deck runs cold and the draw-outs are fierce. When I let out a whoop, when winning a tournament, I usually wake her up and send her into a confused tizzy. What's great is that she really doesn't mind and she'll go right back to sleep. On days where I'm sick and curled up on the couch playing poker, she'll walk in and check on me every once in a while. Maybe she'll even give me a nuzzle. If I find myself playing the Michael Woods Celebrity Invitational Tournament late into the night, she is usually up with me in my office, patiently waiting for me to finish up and head up to bed. Best of all, I love to tuck my feet under her hairy belly to keep my toes warm.

They say a dog is a man's best friend and I have that in Katya.
