View Full Version : Write to Win a tournament ticket!

Hollay
08-10-2006, 09:58 AM
Vote for your favorite submission and you are automatically entered into a draw for Hollywood Poker gear!

The person who has the winning entry will win a tournament ticket.

If you'd like to enter the Write to Win contest, simply submit an article, essay, poem, screen play (whatever, really!) about anything poker related to hollay@hollywoodpoker.com. If your entry is a posted in the forum and receives the most votes, you'll score a tournament ticket.

This week we are going to try something different. A few of you have suggested that I NOT identify the author of the entry so that people vote for the submissions only.

Please feel free to PM me with any thoughts/opinions on this change and judging from the response, we'll decide if it's permanent or not. :waytogo:

Without further ado, this week's finalists:

Entry #1

(To the tune of the Creedence Clearwater Revival song, Bad Moon Risin')

I've seen some bad beats delivered.
I've seen some tilts along the way.
I've seen the nut flush get rivered.
I've seen some bad beats today.

Chorus:
Don't play loose, play tight.
It takes good cards to stand and fight.
Don't go tilting off tonight.

I see a hurricane a-brewin'.
I know. He only had 1 out.
I hear the voice of rage and ruin.
I know you want to scream and shout.

(Chorus)

Hope you'll stop tapping on the fish bowl.
When scared, fish will swim away.
Taking their money is your main goal.
Take a breath, smile, and say, "Nice play"

(Chorus)

(Chorus)

Entry #2

( Brady Bunch theme song )

Here's the story of HP poker, some of us are friends, and some are foes, When you have three Kings, he has three Aces, but thats the way it goes. I was excited to win a ticket to a $20 tourney,... but I was short stacked all the way....nee ded the big chip leaders to knock some out with a big play. Well, I finally made it down to 4th place, only needed one more to go, had my hopes up, just wanted third place, Oh please make it so. Then I was All-in with the Big blind..2,7 worst hand in poker so they say, I typed gg, thought it was over, never thought the flop would go my way.....2,2,2,, I typed.. lol... made it to third place! One guy started swearing at me, never had someone be so mean, but I ended up going All-in, this time I had two Queens! The two remaining players called me, I took them both down and felt so good, second place is where I stood. We went back and forth for a long time, Blinds were really killing me. Got dealt Big Slick, then got rivered, at least its over.

Report WSOP

Actually this is not about the famous poker players but about some of the people I met. Some of the behind the scenes HP people as well as some members we all know and love.

Sunday July 30th

Went to meet with Baileyhart at her hotel. She was staying off strip so we arranged to meet there and head over to the Rio where the WSOP was being held. I walk into the hotel she was staying at and head over to the poker room to find her. She is sitting over near by and calls to me. Never having seen even a photo of her I don’t know what to expect. She is a petite little thing with a great smile. Much more intimidating on the Poker Table than in person. She was as sweet as can be. We decide to go find BellaDonna and Cgar. So we jump into my car and head over to the RIO. She’s calling bella as we drive over and finally gets a hold of her and makes arrangements to meet inside.

We finally get to the RIO and make our way over to the convention center and through a maze of Gaming booths and drop by quickly for a peek at the HP booth. We then go on over to Doyles Room and find Bella and Cgar. We all all excited about finally meeting! Bella and Cgar are sitting at a small table in the Room with bags of “loot” they acquired at the convention. The convention has booths from nearly all the online Poker Sites and are giving away tons of goodies. Not just cheap trinkets mind you but some really nice stuff. I should of came by a day earlier darn it! So they are showing off their goods and I’m anxious to go get myself some goodies! But first they take us over to the HP booth an introduce us to the HP staff. Several HP models are there and some of the behind the scenes HP people. They are all great people make us all feel right at home.

So Bailey and I make the rounds gathering up goodies and samples at the booths and collecting everything from Poker Key Chains to Super glue! Don’t ask why someone who represents super glue was there. We are both hungry and go over to say goodbyes to Bella and Cgar. We meet one of the HP Model Heidi at the HP booth as we say bye. Bailey is leaving the next morning and I am taking her to play in her first live game.

We head over to Boulder Station which is near where she is staying and to play. We buy in and both are seated at the same table. I’m going up and down, mostly down when Bailey finally gets a great hand and gets back to even! We decide to cash out, and head to her hotel. This table had one of them jerks who raises before the flop every hand. Kind of pissing most of us off. So it was good to get out. I drop Bailey at her hotel and say our goodbyes.

Monday
July 31

Arrive at the HP Booth around noon time Bella had told me that Vince Van Patten was suppose to play that day was stopping over there before he played. He was running late but made an effort to stop over and meet us. He arrives and flashes a huge smile!
I melt! He takes photos with all of us and chats a bit with the HP staff. I take a few more photos of HP Model Heidi and Bella and Cgar. They are leaving today so I say my goodbyes and so I decided to spend the rest of the day hitting a few booths and gathering a few more mementos of my first WSOP.

SPAM I AM

I am Al N
Al N I am
I like to promote
I like to SPAM

With you on your knees
Pleading perhaps
'Don't SPAM your Tournies
Using all CAPS

We do not like him
this Al N Man
We do not like his
Lobby SPAM

I feel the need
for caps to use
so newer members
have time to peruse

the information
that brings them to yous
into my tourneys
for you to abuse

you take their chips
then say Good Game
but if they weren't there
it'd not be the same

so I SPAM the lobbies
for to get this job done
finding people to play
Just so you can have fun

(but then I hear . . . )

We do not like him
this Al N Man
We do not like his
Lobby SPAM

These tourneys aren't mine
they belong to you
with HP support
and bounty points too

We keep them playing
by signing more on in
but how did YOU find them
when YOU wanted to begin?

You sat in the lobby
and watched me chat
With CAPS that annoyed you
but YOU READ it, and that

is how you learned of this game
and where to find it to play
Why now can't I use CAPS
to find OTHERS this way?

We do not like him
this Al N Man
We do not like his
Lobby SPAM

With HP's blessing
I use CAPS to drive home
this topic we're addressing
right here in this poem

So I will use CAPS in the lobby
to get my points through
and take your abuse
with no thanks from you

But when you win FIRST
in the Early Outer Points race
Just remember the man
who kept information in your face

I don't want your thanks
nor apologies
just no longer to hear
these incessant pleas

We do not like him
this Al N Man
We do not like his
Lobby SPAM

So this is my story
I'm telling all truths
I swear on Green Eggs and Ham
and the GREAT Dr. Suess

Entry #5

Poker finally I can play. After years of being classified as "WOMAN" you can't play this is for men I have found out I can play that its everyone's game and it doesn't matter so much as if I win as much as the fun I have playing, trying to figure out when someone raises to the all in limit if I should or shouldn't. Its a thrill so to speak like racing cars And if I loose one tournament there is always another tournament. The best is playing in the ones that are free and maybe someday I will win.

I enjoyed reading every one! I 'spose it shouldnt be a surprise to find a fair bit of hidden talent at HP? :silly:

But I gotta say, much as I enjoyed them all, only Spam I am made me chuckle out loud.

Great job by all - when I next have a little free time I am gonna have get back to submitting here. :waytogo:

If you are going to make them anonymous entries (which I like) then maybe you need to stipulate no identifying features in the submission either...

I like the idea of NOT being a popularity contest by posting the names of the submitters. YET, sometimes the topics are poker related of a personal nature or a situation where people would know who the submitter is.

Not sure what the right course of action would be: To ban all First Person submissions and not include the names OR to leave it as is.

I may tell folks to come in here to read or that I've something posted but never tell anyone how to vote. Like to think everyone votes for the one they like the most anyway. I personally have been sent here by people to look at their submissions and voted for the one I thought was best and it wasn't the person's who sent me in here.

Maybe, Hollay, the fair thing would be to just trust people. Hate to see you have to censor or throw out any submissions of anybodys.

Just my thoughts on it.

Nah... You want people to submit, and there will be times when it is obvious who a writer is.

Suppose ATE submits an article. A great way to get that recognition and tournament ticket he so covets. We'd all recognize the writing. [Edit: I suspect I would recognize an article by terryruss or maverick too :) ]

I like no names attached, but would not prohibit identifying features.

Spam I am - Reprise

Do I like Al N Smithee's Spam?

Not sure I do, what could be his plan?

To annoy us into reading his drivel?

Or teach us how to remain civil?

or inform us of a Great tournament series

building it up so we all WIN, here he's

taking our barbs so HP will support

everyone's tourney growing effort

So successful now are the Early Outers

Hopefully there will be fewer doubters

and Al N will have to Spam us less

Which is a good thing for all, I guess.

Do I read them in the lobby?

Read them only as a hobby?

Take them with a grain of salt?

or keep them safely in a vault?

Praise and gratefully thank the man?

or tell him go to hell with his spam?

I'm not sure now what I should do

either laugh or cry, which one would you?

I do not like green eggs and spam,

but I guess Al N ain't such a bad man.

At least I hope this is what you all think

But either way, I'm writing this with a wink.

I agree 100% with you. Can't have identifying features in them....

Thanks for all the fabulous feedback everyone. :waytogo:

For now, I think I'll leave out the entrants name, but will not censor any indications of the entrants identity in the body of the submission. In some cases, the person who the piece is about is central to the entry and I don't want to diminish that.

I think if someone really wanted to encourage their pals to vote for them, they could accomplish this without their name attached to their entry. (i.e. "Mine's the one about the badger, whistle and pack of Juicy Fruit at the Bellagio.") Not as easy, granted, but still possible. :)

We'll see how this works and make changes if necessary.

Moving on:

Congratulations to Al N Smithee, who seems to be our reigning champ! He's won a tournament ticket that he can use for the Michael Woods Celebrity Invitational or the Hollywood Poker Celebrity Classic.

Also congratulations to allmenfold, who's won Hollywood Poker gear for voting. :)

'It's good to be the King' - Mel Brooks, History of the World Part I

Actually, with all humility there were quite a few I would have easily voted for had I not been so crass as to vote for my own here. I think the entries in this contest are getting as good as ever and all these folks should be congratulated. Hope many will submit again. It really was an interesting mix this time around. Hope that trend continues also.

Thank you to everyone who voted for your favorites - who ever they were. Not a writing contest without all the readers for sure. Again, one interesting note . . . only about 10% of everyone that stops at this thread ever votes, WHY IS THAT? Just curious.

Thanks for the compliment. It would have been a hard choice for me between yours and one other one here for sure had I not had my own to vote for. Well done yourself DB.

Hopefully NOT the only tune in your repertoire?;)
