View Full Version : Poll: What's in a name?

Hey everyone!

So, here's the question: How significant is your Hollywood Poker nickname?

I've set up a poll, but feel free to expand on your answer by replying to this thread as well.

I, personally, spent hours and hours in intense delibration to come up with mine. :silly:

A = Allison (my wife)
L = Leah (my daughter)

Our names actually are very significant at HP. It is how we recognize one another and it is much better to have a username than Player 1-10 at each table, this way we can take notes on each player's game-which is SO helpful! Without our names, gameplay would definitely be much more difficult.

I think MOST people make a name is representative of themselves - i.e. as calo explained his.. it shows his family is first and foremost on his mind.

As in real life, most people will seek the origin of their name and see how it fits their personality .. I've come to find the names online do the same. When people are approached about a Negative or Vulgar name, seems the one with the name will attempt to pass it off as attempting to be humorous or in a pissy mood the day them declared it -- however, they typically live up to the negative name in their actions -- Crude begets crudness; hateful names beget hate

I like for the nicknames on my poker sites to reflect an image or have some significance other than just being a bunch of randomly and hastily chosen letters and numbers. This actually, coming up with a unique name, is the longest part of the registration process on any poker site for me.

On a site I knew mostly europeans played who play very, tight aggressive as a group - making them all easy to read actually - I was 'GladUCalled' as I would play ONLY the NUTS there or not at all. I'd usually blind out or win. People didn't remember as much as I did the times I blinded out, BUT THEY DID REMEMBER the times I had beaten them and in the Chat box was: <GladUCalled>GladUCalled. Soon after about a month of getting well-known there I could sit back ONLY PLAYING THE NUTS and occasionally BLUFF as well and hardly EVER get called. So I started not being blinded out so often and at least placing most of the time, if not outright winning. That name had much significance for THAT site.

Earlier on, when signing up for my 2nd site I ever played on I used the name: DyslexicMonk. It is still my Yahoo IM ID to this day. The reason behind this name was strategic also. As I was learning the game of poker on my first site, I fell prone to 'chasing' flushes but ESPECIALLY straights. I wouldn't catch often, but when I did the wins were big and the complaints at the table were many, which I also enjoyed but as yet had not learned how to take advantage of all that grousing by other players, so I was losing money. 'DyslexicMonk' was to always be there reminding me of how NOT to play. Thelonious Monk wrote a tune called 'Straight No Chaser'. I became NO Straight Chaser, hence the dyslexic part. (I am slightly dyslexic myself so am familiar with word and letter order reversals.) It did help a LOT and I stopped losing money for the first time playing poker with this name.

As for Hollywood Poker . . . I noticed that there were Celebrities here so that using a name such as even a 'dead' celebrity was probably not going to be so original. I also figured there were probably a lot of 'JamesWoods101', 'JamesWoods2000' and such. Irony is I've never seen even an allusion to either here having been a member over a year now, but thought I wanted to be more original anyway. I needed a pseudonym that was Hollywood related but was NOT the name of some actual person of fame yet would still be widely recognized as being associated with solely Hollywood.

Then it hit me. As a long time film buff and stayer-late-after-the-movie-is-over-in-the-theatre-CREDIT-reader I remembered some trivia about directors who, for whatever reason - usually over artistic vs financial editing decisions between producers and directors - would no longer wish their name to be associated with the project. They would instead request an 'Alan Smithee' (or some variation of this name) Director Credit rather than using their own name. Alan Smithee would be a GREAT NAME to use at HOLLYWOOD POKER that wouldn't infringe on the rights of true namesakes and yet would have strictly a Hollywood derivation.

Alan Smithee, however was NOT allowed to be used by HP as a registered name. HP also blocked the use of the other variations prevalent in the film industry: Allen Smithee, Allan Smithee, etc. But they missed one, and phonetically it reads true as well: AL N SMITHEE

Once I figured out how to get around this minor road block I HAD to use this name for HOLLYWOOD POKER. It is the name of a 'celebrity' who never WAS a celebrity in fact. Perfect fit I thought. Done deal. So here I am, 'Al N Smithee'.

I also like using it as I often don't wish the final product of HOW I've played here to be associated with my REAL name. Quite apropos, don't you think? ;)

Aren't you sorry you asked now, Hollay?

mine is taken from the Cosby show, the little girl on there had a friend that she called buuuud, my name is bud, so buuuud (with 4 u's) came naturally. in fact thats what most of my family calls me. the only mistake i made was when i came from another pokersite to this one i just added a dot to my nic since you cannot use the same one. (shared servers i assume) and now i have been accused of being a monkey account because of the dot.

funny how something like a dot can mark you :what:

I, like my father and my godfather (Dad's brother), are/were Marine Corps air wing veterans. My Dad and Uncle Bill served during WWII and I during Viet Nam. I am the female in the group, thus the wm-Woman Marine. SemperFi is an abbreviation of Semper Fidelis, the Marine Corps motto, which is Latin and means always faithful.

Desertrex66
08-22-2006, 05:05 PM
Desertrex was the name of my favorite horse the ran all the time at Atlantic city race Track (acrc). The best memory I have of ACRC, I was with a friend and bragging how Desertrex always wins. The man behind me started asking all these questions about the horse. I must have spent 5 minutes how the horse is a lock. He smiled and introduced himself... It was the owner of the horse.

I also had to add to my nickname since I use Desertrex at Pokeroom. So what better way to honor my favorite hockey player than to attach his number to my name. (Mario Lemieux). It would take a long time to think of a different name if I had to replace it!!!!

:waytogo: Hollay, I like this thread, good idea! Appers, I dig your insite, and think I also agree... ;) Al N Smith - VERY nice reply! I enjoyed reading what you'd written, nicely thought out. (To the military boys - tyvm!)
 My nickname originated from my nick at another site, which is 14ledge4me. I'm obsessed and in love with my big dog-boy, his name is Legend. I call him "Ledge" for short most times. So my name reads like this "One-For-Ledge-For-Me".:silly:  So, not wanting to remain the same nick at another site, yet being familiar to those who new me prior... I just added an "S" to my nick and got rid of a couple of the numbers - cuz there always seemed to be too many anyways.. lol. :club: :diamond:  :spade: sledge14 it is.

This is the very first online name I ever registered. It was the name I wanted to give my future daughter but by the time I had her, her name became Jaclyn. It comes from the name Amanda, a name I always wished my mother gave me, and the mandolin, which I play and find to be the sweetest sounding string instrument I ever heard. It is also the name I used when I had a 4 hour show as an online stream jockey, which is how I met TNHunter and soon after married.

My firstname is Evan, a few years ago I had a friend called James who we called Jimbo. He didn't really like that so for a day or two he gave everyone else -bo nicknames in protest, so I was Evbo. My girlfriend at the time loved the name Evbo and kept on using it. We remain friends and she still calls me Evbo.

We broke up 3 years ago but it's the only nickname I've ever had and she was very special to me so I clung to it. Evbo was already taken on ongame, so when I first joined an ongame site I went with the l33t variant 3vbo, then when I came to HP I had to alter it again and went with 3vb0. I only play at two sites now, HP and a non-ongame site, I am 3vb0 at both.

People who aren't familiar with l33t seem to think it is a Star Wars droid name, Three-Vee-Bee-Oh like Cee-Three-Pee-Oh but that similarity was unintentional. ;)

A rose by any other name would smell as sweet.

Being partial, for reasons too long and personal to post here, to all things Scandanavian, when I signed up all I knew was I wanted a good Viking name. After a few variations did not work, I choose the name Skallagrim because it was accepted and because the greatest of all the Viking "skalds" (same as bards to the Celts, but more violent) was Egil Skallagrimsen (Egil, son of Skallagrim) - whose deeds and words can be found in the 13th century Icelandic story: "Egil's Saga."

A loose translation of "skallagrim" from old norse is "lean and mean."

The 45 means nothing.

INTHESADDLE
08-26-2006, 03:11 PM
Some of you already know the meaning of INTHESADDLE. We have a small horse here in FL and before I got down in my back real bad, you only had to look "in the saddle" to find me. I constantly rode and worked/trained our horse for various tasks (western pleasrure/performance showing and trail riding). Don't ride anymore as often as I'd like to, but still ride. Now I do most of the training from the ground.

The names here I feel are very significant for various reasons already mentioned. What was not mentioned was trying to guess the reason behind it and finding out you were right or WAY off base lol.

Have gone by SaddleTramp, SaddleUp, Roundpen (which is a traing area within 60' circle walled with corral panels or built of wood). To many variations already taken on here and didn't want to be a handle with another number lol. Was listening to some old "real" western tunes and "Back In The Saddle Again" was playing, and I jumped right on it.

That's the whole story buckaroos and buckarooettes. Cya round the tables

 I was told by someone in the lobby one day, that my name had caused quite a stir. Some people thought I was against Ducks...... I was called " The Duck " by a fellow workmate back in 1969, because of the way I combed my hair, it was called a ducktail. That nickname has stuck with me ever since. So now when things are going well I say " AINT IT DUCKY " . I should have thought about spacing this out before I registered, it might have saved some confusion. To bad we cannot change or alter our names after registering. If I had known before hand I would have given this more thought. This is also my nickname on Ebay, as a seller of collectibles and small antiques, ( and anything else I know I can make a good profit on ). Im also known as "4 the dogs", and "aint here" on other sites. SO NOW YOU KNOW!!!

hahaha nice thread goin, good idea. My nic is fairly easy to figure out. I have an obsession with aces in poker. Live play and on line. I seem to lose alot with them in both. No matter how i play em, how good or bad the other players are, i can count on one thing in poker....my pocket aces being cracked. So screw it, one day i went out into our backyard which the dolores river flows through. I put to cards A-A into the river and Up Da River they went. Hence the nic. In case ur wondering I keep track of this crap. Here's the score over 8 years of both live and on line play:

hands lost with A-A 1,476
hands won with A-A 216

Need i say more.

Well this nickname came from my father who passed away in 1984, a man that was loved and admired by most who knew him. He was a Policeman for 31 years and retired due to injuries from a car wreck during a high speed chase. As a man of huge stature 6ft 5in tall and 385 lbs. he was greatly feared by the bad guys. His claim to fame was to be in on the capture and subsequent shooting of Pretty Boy Floyd.

His nickname was Ducky, given to him by his mother. Everyone exspected that I would be called Little Ducky but it just never stuck. I take after my dad in many ways, I am also a big man 6ft 1in and 295 lbs. and I like to think that he would approve of the life I have led, and as a man with a great sense of humor I know he is laughing at the fun we have here at HP with my nickname.

I have used variations of Da-Duck as websites allowed such as Da-Ducky, DaDUCKSTER etc.

So simply put it is to honor one of the finest men to ever walk this earth.

Some people create a name that reflects their personality, etc.
In playing more and more on the site, we begin to recognize certain names at the tables, and can make notes.

My nickname when I was a kid was Jiddy because my name is Jill Dee and my sister couldn't say that & it became Jiddy. I wanted my nickname to be JiddyWoods because I'm Jimmy & Mike's cousin but it wouldn't let me so I decided on JiDee. I wanted to get the Woods in there too because I am very proud to be a Woods. I guess the Woods was too long so it became JiDee. I like it now.

I'm still heartbroken I can't use it. I couldn't find any variant of my other choices I liked so I finally typed in my middle name in frustration, and of course it accepted it. At most places, HP included, I am BadGirlNorth. For some reason, when I was using that name, only half the site worked - the playing part. I couldn't access my account, or anything else that required a password - didn't recognize me. There is an artists' co-op up here called Bad Girls of the North. When I was signing up elsewhere a long time ago I couldn't come up with a name I liked. I had a waterbottle sitting on my desk from Bad Girls, saw it, had an epiphany and voila! I've been BadGirlNorth ever since. But of course, that didn't fly here, so, I went to Plan B.

Family lore has it that I couldn't pronounce my given name, Leslie, when I was a toddler. It came out as "Sassy." It stuck. Boy, did it stick! lol Well, there are a lot of Sassy s (didn't want to say Sassies) out there, and I refuse to be way down the list with a larger number, so I put One in front. It works on several different levels lol!

So, if you ever see BadGirlNorth, OneSassyGirl, or OneBadGirl out there in pokerland - it's me! Give me a holler!

Little Heaven was the title of my favorite song when I started using the internet, so it was the first screen name I used online back in 1995. It kinda stuck with me ;)

I tried to use the name Treadora, which was an old character name of mine. I use for that name for EVERYTHING, but apparently HP couldn't verify it's was mine and won't let me use it... I'm still heartbroken I can't use it. I couldn't find any variant of my other choices I liked so I finally typed in my middle name in frustration, and of course it accepted it. So, that's the story of my name here... nothing too special. I still wish I had MY name though..

You should have just put an underscore after it or in the middle like I did! ;) ;)

Family lore has it that I couldn't pronounce my given name, Leslie, when I was a toddler. It came out as "Sassy." It stuck. Boy, did it stick! lol /QUOTE]

You are darn lucky it did not come out as "Lassie"! :D :D

Amandolyn, I liked what you wrote for an explanation... it was very heart warming - the whole story you posted was nice.
Ducky, your post just totally melted my heart and brought tears to my eyes...

my initials and birthday. no imagination ya know.

Nothing wrong with it at all. Mine's worse! lol.
I've had mine for a long time and I really don't like it. I just feel obligated to keep it .. only because it was the first name I started with.

Mine is a shortened version of the first log in ID I ever used. Way back when we got our first PC, I knew almost nothing about the internet, and not much more about computers. ( One of my first emails was from my wiseass oldest son, making sure to tell me that www DID NOT refer to the Wrestling Federation, and the thing that popped out of my computer WAS NOT a cup holder).

Not being very creative, when I first stumbled onto Yahoo, and registered, I used a combo of both mine and my hub's names. That was "char_mar". Made some good internet friends that I'm still in touch with now, and when we were going to register at another game site, one of my friends suggested I shorten my ID to charm. Add the numbers for my birthday, and VOILA!

That's my story and I'm sticking to it!

Frodo_NL

Mine is basically short for my real name (that one being Frank Rodolf). The NL is because I am from the Netherlands. ;)

On most sites you can find me as FrodoNL, but that was not an option on here, since I already play with that one on another site on the ongame network.

For Me, Hyjinx was taken so I added the x_. But now I like it better this way.

Mine is based on what I remember from one of the many comics I used to read when I was a kid - the SciFi comic 2000AD. There was always an opening editorial at the beginning from the editor/alien.

Boragthung Earthlings was the alien 'greeting'. I read these comics a quarter of a century ago so the memory was a bit vague. I've since rediscovered the actual wording is boragg thung, but I have been using boragthung for donkeys years as a username so I'm sticking with it.

Not very significant really.
I've just started reading the Gor novels and have Tarl Cabot on my mind, otherwise I probably would have gone with something else.
BTW, some one else has Tarl_Cabot as a monicker so I added the year I was born at the end.

The inspiration behind my name is so utterly "blah" that I simply make up a different back story everytime I'm asked. My usual fallback stories are that I'm either swedish, or my parents hated me as a child.
