The casting call winner's time at the WSOP
It was amazing. Hollywood Poker put us up (I came with my brother) at Caesars Palace.
The first thing we did when we arrived was go to the Bellagio and play some Poker. We both won a little and I saw Phil Ivey betting thousands on the craps table.
The next day we met up with Anthony and the rest of the Hollywood Poker crew at their display in the Poker Lifestyles show.
They took some pics with me and the HP Girls and I met the winner of the Celebrity Shootout, Emir and his friend. They are great guys.
Anthony took us both to the main desk to pick up our tickets. He even waited in line with us to make sure there were no problems, which there weren’t. Then he took us all out for dinner and drinks. We were so lucky to have Anthony as our host he really couldn’t be a nicer guy.
I was playing in the main event the next day so I cut out early and got some sleep.
The day of the event was crazy. The room and halls were it was held was packed with scores of poker people. It was like I was in Hold' em heaven.
My table was right at a rail so we had a big crowd watching us.
There were a couple of pros at my table but no one recognizeable.
I was off my game early and just couldn’t get a feel for the players. I proceeded to play my worst poker ever.
I was making bad calls and worse moves at the wrong time.
I lost a good portion of my stack and we were only about 5 hours in. Our table broke and I got moved to a table that had a nice view of Shannon Elisabeth. That kept me calm. Gus Hanson was 2 tables down. Strangely his bald Danish head also had a calming effect on me.
I slowly worked my way back to almost even when I got caught up in a hand that took half my stack.
I was now short stacked and looking at AK. I pushed all-in and got 1 caller. We open. He had pocket 9s.
The flop came all bricks but 3 spades. I don’t have any but one of his nines is a spade. Guess what happened next. Of course I hit my king but it was the King of Spades.
It was all over for me and I wasn’t happy about the way I played most of the day but if you look at the list of pros who got knocked the first day I outlasted most. Of course they got knocked out because they were trying to build their stacks early and I got knocked because of some terrible play but we’ll ignore that.
I went back to the hotel and regrouped. I was still there for 7 more days and there was a lot of poker to be played. I promised myself I would never play that craptasic again. My brother and I went to a 100 person tourney at the Sahara casino that night. I made final table and he won it. From that moment on every poker game we played we won.
On day 4 they were having satellites for the WSOP $1000 no limit event, which was to played the next day. I entered.
At my table were 3 pros I beat them all in about a half an hour.
I did it. I was going to be in another World Series Event.
WSOP Event #44 No Limit Hold’em
We started with 1500 in chips. After an hour I had 2000 in chips and was moved to Todd Brunson’s table. I was involved in one pot with him. I had pocket 6's and I raised 3 times the blind, he called. The flop came As 3d 10c I bet half the pot and he folded.
Then I got moved again.
I was moved right beside poker pro Robert Williamson the III.
He is an amazing guy. We were on the table for about 4 hours together and had a great time talking.
Then these back-to-back hands came up:
I’m on the button and have KK. I raise 5 times the blind and seat one, who only has a hundred left if he calls, pushes all in. I quickly call and we open.
KK vs. 55
FLOP
10 9 J
TURN
3
RIVER, you guessed it,
5
I was still ok chips-wise but stung.
The very next hand I get AA.
Early position raises. I decide I’m not going to take any chances and move all in.
He thinks about it for a while and reluctantly calls.
AA vs. JJ
Flop
J 9 Q
the turn gives me life with a 10 and not only doesn’t the king come on the river but the last Jack does.
It was a one day event and I made it pretty far and should of won those 2 hands, so I felt good about my play. I even got a great complement from Williamson who couldn’t believe the 2 bad beats I took in a row.
Back to another smaller tourney. I again made the final table and some decent money.
All in all my brother and I made about $4000 and had an amazing time. We made some great friends in Emir, his friend and Anthony.
I can’t thank Hollywood Poker and Anthony enough. They were great to us and made sure there were no problems.
I couldn't ask for a better experience.
I'll see you all in the WPT Shootout!
